Mission Field: China
Question: What did you learn growing up on the mission field?
Daniel: I grew up in Kunming, China where I had the opportunity to learn a lot about other cultures. I attended an international high school where my classmates spoke different languages, ate different foods, and had other traditions than me. At our international church, it seemed that almost every denomination from the world was represented as we worshiped with brothers and sisters from Ghana, Brazil, and Australia. In the midst of all of those differences, God taught me more about Himself and showed me the beauty of the multifaceted body of Christ. In a lot of ways, growing up among all these cultures felt like a foreshadowing of Heaven.
Question: Why did you choose a Christian college?
Daniel: Coming back to the States after growing up overseas, I was anticipating a fair amount of culture shock. However, I anticipated that students and faculty at a Christian college would be better equipped to understand why my family had moved to China in answer to God’s calling. Furthermore, as my faith was the center of my life, I desired a community of like-minded friends and an education rooted in knowing Christ.
Question: How has CMSF helped you on your journey?
Daniel: CMSF has been a blessing from the start! Initially, I wasn’t even considering colleges in the Midwest, but after hearing about CMSF and reading some of the student profiles online, I decided to apply to Wheaton College. While I was familiar with my parents receiving financial support, it was encouraging on a deeply personal level to see how CMSF chose to meet the specific needs of returning missionary kids, like myself. Throughout college and even medical school, CMSF supported me financially year after year. It’s difficult to fully express my gratitude for CMSF, except to say that I hope to give back to students like myself in the near future.
Question: What is your major and how do you plan to use it after you graduate?
Daniel: I majored in applied health science (human health) during my time at Wheaton College. After graduating from medical school at Loma Linda University I’m now in a family medicine residency program at Kaiser Permanente in Southern California.
